Marina Litvinenko, the widow of Alexander Litvinenko, was born in Moscow in 1962. In 1985 she graduated from the State Moscow Oil and Gas Academy.
Simultaneously her studies Marina practiced professional ballroom dancing. In 1999 she became a teacher of choreography.
Marina and Alexander met in 1993 and a year later, in 1994, their son Anatoly was born and they got married. For both Marina and Alexander it was their second marriage.
After Alexander fled from Russia in September 2000, Marina and Anatoly followed him. Via Spain and Turkey they reached London where they were given political asylum by the British authorities. She received British citizenship in 2006.
In November 2006 Alexander died of poisoning by Polonium-210. Marina also showed signs of radiation contamination.
In her letter addressed to President Putin, in February 2007, Marina asked him not to obstruct the British investigation of her husband`s poisoning. She indicated that she would not rest until the killers were brought to account.
Marina co-authored, with Alex Goldfarb, Death of a Dissident: The Poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko and the Return of the KGB, which was released in London in June 2007 and reprinted in 24 countries in 20 languages.
