Andrei Lugovoi was born in 1965 in Moscow. He is a former KGB officer and today a businessman, who now heads a private security firm.
In the early 90's Lugovoi headed the Russian Prime Minister Yegor Gaydar’s security service. In the years that followed, he was in charge of Boris Berezovsky's security, and up to November 2006 his security firm was responsible for Berezovsky's family members' security.
In June 2001 Lugovoi was charged with being an accomplice in Nikolai Glushkov's, Berezovsky's friend and business partner, alleged escape from prison and was arrested. In September 2002 he was released from jail.
Lugovoi was often in London on his company business. He declares that he was doing business with Alexander Litvinenko.
On November 1st 2006, Lugovoi, Kovtun and Sokolenko met Litvinenko in London's Millennium hotel. That same evening Litvinenko fell ill. During his hospitalization, Litvinenko informed his friends of his suspicions that Lugovoi and his associates, who attended the meeting, are related to his poisoning.
Due to an agreement between Russian and British law-enforcement agencies Lugovoi was questioned in Moscow by Scotland-Yard investigators. He utterly denied any accusations made against him. More so, Lugovoi claims that he is a victim. It was reported that he went through a series of medical tests for Polonium-210 poisoning.
Lugovoi is also subjected to Russian General Prosecutor Office’s investigation of Litvinenko's poisoning. He does not comment on the investigation's course referring to the need for confidentiality.
Lugovoi does not exclude the possibility of coming to London to give evidence to the Scotland-Yard.
